Learning Through Play
Music
Children are encouraged to use musical instruments found in each classroom. They are encouraged in singing every day. Children learn children’s praise songs and enjoy playing in a marching band. Children are taught how to stay with the beat of the music, and how to play fast and slow with the rhythm.
Art
Children have an opportunity to play in the art center for free art daily. Art paper, magazines, paint, scissors, crayons, and glue are offered in the art center. A teacher directed art activity is provided every day. This activity will relate to the topic of the week. Teachers encourage children to be creative using the various supplies given.
Blocks
The block center is complete with wooden blocks, cars, trucks, multi-cultural people, many different types of animals, building tools, etc. In the block center children can build and construct buildings, bridges, towers, etc.
Dramatic Play
This is an area that encourages children to use their imagination. Children enjoy dressing up and role playing while in this center. They are taught how to set the table, table manners, and to care for their family. Children have access to hats, shoes, play money, play food, costumes, and telephones.
Reading Center
The book center is a quiet place children can go to enjoy a good book. There are puppets for pretend play, and flannel and/or magnet boards for creating your own stories. There are soft toys for cuddling, and picture cards for viewing. Children also enjoy teacher directed activities, such as story time.
Manipulative Center
This center provides children with toys that enhance fine motor skills, while engaging cognitive skills. Children will enjoy putting puzzles together, building with Lego’s and bristle blocks, along with lacing and/or stringing beads.
Sand and Water
Children enjoy sifting and measuring sand, potting soil, dirt, etc. They learn to bath their babies, float small objects, and pour water from one container to another
Science Center
The science center contains items like magnifying glasses, magnets, rocks, shells, plastic bugs, etc. This center is set up for children to explore. Occasionally there are teacher directed experiments. For example: sink/float, observation of food farms, plants and seeds, nature walks, graphs (hair & eye color), shadows, sea life, weather, water absorption, and liquid & solids.
Math
Children are given items to sort by shape, size, color and/or type. Children are provided matching games like Memory. They are encouraged to count beads while putting them on a string. Children are given endless opportunities throughout the day. Every moment is a teachable one.
Safe Place
This area is used in conjunction with our cozy corner. When children are frustrated and want to be alone, they can go to this center to relax. We ask parents to bring in pictures upon enrollment for children to make a photo album (with the help of their teacher) they can look at to sooth anxiety. Soft squeeze toys are located in the center to allow children to express frustration. Pillows/lounger is for comfort and items with different texture are provided for sensory stimulation.
Fine Motor
Lollipop Stop Child Development Center provides children with daily activities that develop fine motor skills. Activities are age and developmentally appropriate and include, but are not limited to, lacing cards/beads, small blocks, writing, puzzles, manipulatives, coloring, drawing, pegs, etc.
Gross Motor
Lollipop Stop Child Development Center provides children with daily activities that develop gross motor skills. Activities are age and developmentally appropriate and include, but are not limited to, walking, skipping, heel to toe walking, running, jumping, hopping, climbing, balancing, exercising, throwing, catching, parachute games, hopscotch, etc.
